There is something so special about a baby’s first birthday. It’s the moment where those sleepy newborn days officially feel like they’re in the rearview mirror, and suddenly you have this happy, curious little person exploring the world.
Sweet Violet came into the studio to celebrate turning one, and her personality could not have been more fitting for this milestone — happy, playful, and just a little adventurous.
From the moment she arrived, she was taking everything in with those big curious eyes. Like many babies around this age, she started the session a little shy. But the moment someone smiled at her, she couldn’t help but smile right back.
And once the smiles started, they didn’t stop.
A Simple and Timeless One Year Session
One of my favorite things about first birthday sessions in the studio is how simple they can be. A calm space, soft light, and letting babies just be themselves.
Violet wore the sweetest little pink outfit to start, and the soft tones photographed beautifully against the clean studio backdrop. At this age, babies are usually sitting confidently, sometimes standing, and always moving — which means we get such a fun variety of expressions and personality.
Her little giggles and curious looks made every photo feel completely her.
Big Brother Joined the Celebration
One of the most meaningful parts of this session for me was seeing Violet with her big brother.
A few years ago, I photographed his one year session too — back before I even had my studio space. Seeing families come back as their babies grow is honestly one of the biggest honors of this job.
Now he’s about to turn five, and watching him snuggle up next to his little sister was such a full-circle moment.
These sibling photos always end up being some of the most treasured images from a milestone session.
The Sweet Details
Violet was especially drawn to toys that made music or fun noises (which is very on-brand for most one-year-olds!). Those little giggles and curious expressions are exactly what make this age so fun to photograph.
And while she wasn’t quite sure about everything at first, her adventurous little personality kept shining through as the session went on.
From tiny baby rolls to big bright smiles, these are the moments parents always tell me they want to remember.
