The New Mom Survival Guide: Must-Have Items for the First Few Months

Welcoming a newborn into the world is one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences, but let’s be honest, it can also feel overwhelming! Whether you’re preparing for your first baby or just need a refresher, there are a few essential items every new mom should have on hand to make those first few months as smooth as possible. From baby gear to self-care products, this guide will cover the must-haves that will help both you and your newborn thrive.

As a professional newborn photographer here in Valley Station, Kentucky, I’ve had the privilege of seeing countless new parents adjust to life with their little ones. And while every family’s journey is unique, these items will help you feel prepared and ready for anything!

Baby Gear Essentials

1. A Comfortable Baby Carrier

Carrying your little one around all day doesn’t have to leave your arms aching. A soft, ergonomic baby carrier will allow you to keep your baby close while giving you the freedom to move around hands-free. Look for carriers with adjustable straps and ample support for both you and your baby’s comfort.

There are two that I recommend. One is for a fresh newborn https://amzn.to/40UnH1h and one is for a little bit older, around 3 months and older https://amzn.to/4huXnBJ

2. Swaddle Blankets

Swaddling your newborn can make them feel safe and secure—like they’re still in the womb. A soft, breathable swaddle blanket is perfect for nap time and helps with soothing a fussy baby. Plus, they make adorable photos for those early baby memories!

My girl loved the velcro ones! https://amzn.to/4aR1uWm

3. A Reliable Diaper Bag

You’ll need a diaper bag that has enough room for all the essentials (diapers, wipes, bottles, burp cloths), plus some extra pockets to stay organized. Look for one that’s stylish but practical—bonus points if it has a changing mat for quick diaper changes on the go!

Here was my go to when I had my little one and still carry this! https://amzn.to/4aQs6GS

4. Infant Car Seat

This is a non-negotiable item for newborns. A secure, easy-to-install car seat ensures your baby’s safety while traveling. Bonus tip: Make sure it’s compatible with your stroller, so you can easily transfer your little one when you’re out and about!

We still use this one to this day! It is the best all in one! https://amzn.to/417l6SL

5. Baby Monitor

Whether you’re in another room or just need a moment to yourself, a good baby monitor can give you peace of mind. Some monitors come with video and audio capabilities, so you can keep an eye on your baby as they sleep, even from a different floor.

If you’re looking for one that does NOT connect to wifi, this one was the best that we have used so far https://amzn.to/417l6SL

6. Nursing Pillow

If you plan to breastfeed, a nursing pillow can make a world of difference in comfort for both you and your baby. It helps support your baby’s head and neck during feeding while relieving pressure on your back and arms.

Our lactation specialists recommended this one and it really helped me ease into breastfeeding https://amzn.to/42I5mXM

7. Postpartum Belly Wrap

After giving birth, your body will need some time to recover. A postpartum belly wrap can help support your core muscles, reduce swelling, and give you a little extra comfort while you adjust to your new routine.

I really feel like this one helped me heal much faster, stop bleeding and heal my core https://amzn.to/4hvwduy

8. Comfortable Lounge Wear

Let’s face it: You’ll spend a lot of time at home in those first few months. Invest in some soft, comfortable lounge wear that makes you feel good and can easily be worn for both lounging and nursing.

Recommend going for black: https://amzn.to/3EvkX2S

9. Hydration & Snacks

Staying hydrated and keeping your energy levels up is essential, especially if you’re breastfeeding. Stock your kitchen with healthy snacks like granola bars, fruit, and nuts, and always have a water bottle within reach.

I was told to do coconut water and oats so I stuck with granola bars and Body Armors(am not a fan of coconut water itself)

10. Skincare Products for Postpartum Skin

Your skin might go through some changes during pregnancy and after birth. A gentle, hydrating lotion, plus a soothing balm for cracked nipples if you’re breastfeeding, can help keep you feeling comfortable and pampered during those busy days.

This one was THE best for my stretch marks https://amzn.to/3Qc3zma

Bonus Tips for New Moms

Don’t be afraid to ask for help! Whether it’s a family member, friend, or professional, it’s okay to lean on others when you need it.

Take care of your mental health. The newborn phase can be tough, so make sure you’re checking in with yourself and seeking support if needed.

Be kind to yourself. Parenting is a journey with ups and downs, but you’re doing an amazing job. Celebrate the small victories!
